When an AI agent makes a consequential decision, someone eventually asks why. Increasingly, the system answering that question is another AI. Sometimes it is the same one.
That is the self-grading gap. AI cannot grade its own homework.
A student marking their own exam has one obvious problem: the incentive is wrong. AI grading AI has a subtler one. The grader shares the failure modes of the graded. The same class of model that hallucinated the answer will confidently certify it. The explanation reads well, because generating plausible explanations is exactly what these models do. Plausible is not the same as defensible.
Ask who accepts that kind of answer and the list is short. A regulator examining why an agent routed a trade does not. An LP asking why the fund's agent did what it did does not. A board, an auditor, or a litigation team reconstructing a decision eighteen months later does not. Each of them wants the same thing: proof that does not depend on trusting the system being questioned.
This is why the accountability layer has to be independent, and why it has to be code.
Forge Orbital is deterministic software, independent of the agent platform. There is no model in the decision path, so the verdict cannot drift with a model update, a prompt change or a temperature setting. Bounded evidence goes in, the customer's own policy is applied, and a disposition comes out: allow, block or hold. The same inputs always produce the same verdict. You can rerun it, show it, and hand it to someone who has never met you.
The LLM proposes. Forge Orbital disposes.
None of this argues against deploying agents. It argues for deploying them the way enterprises deploy everything else that touches money, clients or regulated workflows: with an independent record of what happened and why it was allowed. The companies that set that up now will scale agents with confidence. The ones that skip it will meet the question later, in a room they did not choose.
That's what Forge does.
